New Video Added 10/19 – A 13-year-old Secaucus Middle School student, Derek Lagos, died on Monday, sparking the school district to make grief counselors available to students.
The cause of death has not been publicly released but sources said suicide is being probed as a possible cause.
Friends have created a Facebook page for tributes to Lagos which can be viewed here. More than a thousand people have joined the page.
“Our school community is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our middle school students. The staff and administrators of the Secaucus School District express our deepest condolences to this student’s family and friends,” said Secaucus Superintendent Cynthia Randina in a letter to parents released to the media.
Randina said counselors will be available for students throughout the week. School psychologists and social workers were on hand yesterday and will be available through today until 6 p.m. in the middle school/high school cafeteria. (Click for .doc file of letter)
Lagos won the 2007 Secaucus Recreational Basketball MVP and was also known as an avid soccer player. After attending Secaucus Middle School, he was accepted to St. Peter’s Prep’s Higher Achievement Program progam. His obituary notes that he was to become a tutor in 2010 and St. Peter’s said he hoped to attend the school.
A funeral mass was held Friday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church.
