We mentioned the new “air-raid” towers rising above Secaucus courtesy of the county OEM, but an eagle-eyed reader snapped a few new (and much larger) radio beacons and send them over to us.
The Meadowlands Commission said the new 480-foot towers were erected for WEPN radio — the ESPN affiliate at 1050 AM on the dial — to replace three others in East Rutherford which are coming down because of the Xanadu construction.
The MC said they are actually located in North Bergen and the move was necessary because of AM radio interference from Xanadu (there’s an easy Xanadu joke in there somewhere).
The commission has posted this neat image of a helicopter topping off one of the new towers.
The N.Y. Daily News reported in December that ESPN was frustrated with interference issues and planned to build a $12M tower in North Bergen. “Every time they swing a piece of steel, it alters our signal,” Tim McCarthy, GM of ESPN Radio, said of Xanadu.
Media reports have suggested ESPN was eying an FM signal and Crain’s suggested the sports radio network would slide its Deportes Spanish-language network into the AM signal, but ESPN hasn’t confirmed anything.
