Thomas O’Keefe of the Secaucus Police Dept. Detective Bureau told eSecaucus the man, 34-year-old man, Arris Tunc of Clifton, was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center after the accident at about 9:20 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

O’Keeffe said the boom lift was more than 40 feet in the air when it tipped and sent Tunc to the pavement of Meadowlands Parkway.

Fox 5 New York cited an unnamed official in reporting that the lift was not on level ground. O’Keeffe said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

Traffic has been snarled all day along Meadowlands Parkway this afternoon. O’Keeffe said Friday afternoon that the transportation of the damaged lift and other activity would likely cause more backups for the next few hours.

A bus route to and from Secaucus is one of five lines proposed to be cut by New Jersey Transit in a plan outlined Monday.

The No. 78 bus line, which runs from Newark to Secaucus, would be discontinued under the plan, along with the No. 42 (Newark-18th Ave.), No. 43 (Newark-Jersey City), No. 75 (Butler-Newark), and No. 93 (Bloomfield-Newark Light Rail). Six other routes face cuts.

The weekday 78 bus services a large swath of Secaucus, including Secaucus Junction, Meadowlands Hospital, Harmon Cove and Harmon Meadow, connecting to Newark Penn Station.

NJT has dubbed the revamp its “Bush Service Optimization” initiative.

The transit agency said in April that it does not plan to hike fares this year, although fares jumped 25 percent in 2010.

Executive Director James Weinstein said the plan “will ensure that NJ Transit uses its limited resources to provide the best service to the most customers — all while holding the line on fares.”

Weinstein said the moves will save more than $3M a year, of which $1.02M will be invested to expand and enhance service within Newark and corridors between the city and Newark Airport and Elizabeth.

NJT has scheduled public hearings for June 12 in Newark and June 13 in Wayne. Riders can also call or email the transit authority with concerns.

The transit agency said riders of the 11 routes targeted for cuts and changes have access to “reasonable alternatives.”

Schwartz, who is the Secaucus recreation facility director, claims his daughter and other students were verbally harassed by the unnamed Huber Street School teacher starting last fall. The family eventually moved the daughter to Clarendon School after she was diagnosed with a case of stress-related shingles.

The concerned father reprimanded the previous board for not taking action and claims that his daughter wore a recording device for 2 1/2 days and caught examples of the abuse on tape.

The board gave no response to the allegations on the grounds that it was a personal matter. A full report of the meeting can be found here.
