The Secaucus Board of Education has settled the lawsuit filed by Dr. Robert Berckes following his removal as high school principal in April 2018.
The Hudson Reporter published some the details of the settlement as obtained through a public records request, indicating that “the Board has agreed to pay Berckes his annual salary of $124,000 through June 30, 2019.” The agreement also includes Berckes leaving the school district.
Berckes claimed that Montesano authorized how the situation was to be handled before later criticizing the principal. Berckes went on to say that Montesano was trying to destroy his reputation. Berckes filed the suit after the Board tried to revoke his tenure.
The incident was a heated pointed of debate in Secaucus, with many supporting and criticizing Berckes and Montesano. The settlement, however, appears to be the end of the contested episode.
