The former Secaucus High School athletic booster club president charged with stealing $25,000 in funds was represented by her lawyer in her first court date.
Elena I. Ratti was unable to attend the hearing due to an illness in her family. She was represented by lawyer and Secaucus resident Sean M. Pena in Jersey City’s Criminal Justice Reform Court on Wednesday morning.
The 38-year-old Ratti was arrested in early March after allegedly diverting the funds into her personal bank account between July 2015 and August 2016. After a lengthy investigation by law enforcement, she was charged with third-degree theft of movable property and is no longer a part of the booster club.
According to The Jersey Journal, Pena said, “As a town resident myself, I am personally aware that Ms. Ratti was a longtime volunteer in the town of Secaucus, volunteering countless hours to numerous organizations that serve the children of the community. If it’s ultimately determined that Ms. Ratti misappropriated any funds, she has no intention of not making the booster club whole.”
Ratti’s next hearing was set for May 24 in Hudson County Superior Court.
