Sports Authority will be closing seven stores in Northern New Jersey, including its Secaucus location, by the end of August.
The sports equipment franchise filed for bankruptcy in March and will be turning its stores and ,merchandise over to liquidation firms. Leases for the retail locations with be auctioned, with sporting good competitor Dick’s Sporting Goods indicating interest in purchasing some of the stores.
Of course, we know any large vacant stores will bring calls of “Supermarket?!?” from every corner of Secaucus. But the Sports Authority size, layout and proximity to Wal-Mart make a supermarket a very unlikely replacement.
The Sports Authority was once the largest retailer in the category but has been surpassed by Dick’s.
