Traffic Cameras to Patrol Secaucus
Nov 11th, 2011 | By Greg Hazley | Category: On tapBig brother will be watching busy Secaucus intersections in the future as the town is planning a solicitation process to install cameras on traffic lights.
Officials hope to capture and cite vehicles driving through red signals, a problem as the town is a major thoroughfare for cars and trucks.
First Ward Councilman Gary Jeffas said the cameras will snap a photo of a violating car which will be sent to the police for review and possible ticketing.
He said the photos will be taken after the car passes through the red light so “there will be no question” of the violation.
State law permits the devices.
“We’re going to have that coming to Secaucus at some very high-traveled intersections with people speeding through,” he said, adding the town is drafting a request for proposals.

I live in Secaucus and that’s exactly what we need to be spending our tax payer money on.. NOT . It is so frustrating watching our money go to projects like the train station that 4 people use and Xanadu.
That just proves that the town is getting bigger. What is next more police and a paid fire department. We need to get the meadowland commission out of Secaucus.
That’s a good idea, we should have a paid fire department. These men work very hard and give up so much.
Is this going to be enforced or will it be the same as the” PAY TO PLAY” ordnance? Gary was the main man in the” PAY TO PLAY” and Take Back Secaucus has violated the ordnance on numerous occasions.
Wonderful another use of town funds. Meanwhile meadowlands parkway is still flooding and county ave is like driving down a country road.
Big brother comes to Secaucus. We don’t want or need the government watching and controlling us 24 hours a day. Let the cops do their job. God Bless America. Another intrusion on our rights as Americans.
@Cindy – Apparently you have not been to the train station is quite a long time, it has become quite busy.
Would everyone rather take police off patrol and have them monitor the traffic lights? The camers will eventually pay for themselves with the revenue they generate from the summons issued oh yeah and the potential lifes that can be saved…. #justsaying…..
BAD IDEA! !!!! they have installed these camaras in Newark, and its been a disaster.
I saw not 1 but 2 cars blast through a red light this morning on the way to work. If this gets drivers to slow down, it will turn out to be a GREAT IDEA! I hope it works as well as the school crossing signs on Centre Avenue. They have done a GREAT JOB of slowing down traffic. Kudos for both ideas.
Hey Anthony; Why don’t you ask the ward councilman if this will be enforced when you see him in your home town of Lydnhurst.
Another excuse for our fine police officers to continue not doing their jobs. Now we have cameras watching our red lights for them, speed bumps every 30 feet around town so they don’t have to watch for speeders, ridiculous blinking lights and signs up and down Centre Avenue impeding traffic every time someone has to parallel park so they don’t have to watch our pedestrians, etc. What’s next?
The photos should go to an independent authority to review and issue summons. Then maybe they’ll nail the police vehicles that abuse their strobe lights to get to Dunkin Donuts quicker. Better yet, let’s install cameras in the Library parking lot, the Masonic Temple parking lot, Third Ave. by the Exxon station, etc., in order to monitor Secaucus’ Finest at their best.
We should have had a camera watching Dennis and Anthony.
while others are removing the cameras, we are installing them? What the hell are these people thinking?

First of all, it will not be our money being spent. Second, it needs approval from the state. Third, if you read a newspaper once in awhile you will know that the state is not approving any more cameras at this time. So you need to all lighten up. Get the facts before you speak. Better to remain silent and thought a fool then to open your mouth and prove it.

CeeJay,
In your comment you recommended that folks should “get the facts before they speak” and that “the state is not approving any more cameras at this time”.
As of two weeks ago, our funds have been used to fund several cameras that are now all over Meadowlands Parkway. Therefore, it seems that you should “get your facts before you speak” since it seems the state apparently HAS approved more cameras and they are now all over Meadowlands Parkway.
You dear sir/madam, are an idiot. -_-
Anybody know if Meadowlands Parkway has more cameras than other parts of Secaucus? If so, this seems like an unfair and systematic attempt to raise funds from the very residents themselves who get big brother cams instead of clearer lanes on Meadowlands Parkway so that cars don’t accidentally swerve into each other in front of the Townhouses traffic light.
Watch our Fire Chief fly down Paterson Plank Road with lights and sirens to get to Bagel Buffet.
Watch our “Fire Chief” speed down Paterson Plank Road with lights and siren blasting to get to Bagel Buffet.
I got snagged in JC during Christmas for not coming to a complete stop before turning right. They got the plates and even a little video showing the crime. $85 ticket. And it didn’t come to me it went to the person who’s car I was driving. Please be careful folks. Everyone is guilty of this when turning onto First street. NO Rolling Rights in State of NJ except where posted.
The cameras on Meadowlands Parkway have nothing to do with ticketing. Secaucus has been chosen for a pilot program, part of a $17 Million grant received by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. The cameras will be used in conjunction with the traffic signals to monitor and improve traffic flow in the region. If you have a question, call me @ 201-376-3576. If I can’t get to the phone right away, I’ll call you back.
Thank you Mayor for clearing that up. As to the person who wishes to call me an idiot, if you paid attention, my comment was written in December. You responded in April. My facts were correct at that time and as the Mayor said they are not ticketing cameras. I believe you owe me an apology.
Some of you people are pathetic. You complain about speeding cars, ask for more speed bumps on certain streets and say cops are not doing their jobs. Well instead of having a police car sitting at an intersection waiting for someone to go through a red light they can be patrolling our streets. The people complaining are probably the ones going through the red lights to begin with. Really people, get a life.
