Secaucus Ends Tax Holdout
Jun 24th, 2011 | By Greg Hazley | Category: On tapSecaucus officials said this week the town will make its multimillion-dollar payment to the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission tax-sharing pool as a gesture of good faith, ending a nearly two-month holdout in a push to alter the burden of the annual payments.
Representatives from Secaucus and surrounding towns, along with officials from the Meadowlands Commission met Monday in Secaucus and hammered out a resolution to request state relief for municipalities paying into the fund this year, as well as legislation to alter the structure of the fund moving forward.
Secaucus’ tab for 2011 is $2.6M.
The resolution, inked on Monday, also called for tax-sharing payments to be exempt from the 2% property tax cap levy and for state officials to consider alternatives like a regional entertainment surcharge or hotel tax in lieu of payments from local towns.
Fred Dressel, the mayor of Moonachie who directs the Hackensack Meadowlands Municipal Committee, called the agreement “the most progress we’ve made on this vital issue in my 20 years as director.”
Secaucus and Carlstadt ($2.1M) agreed to make their payments with an understanding that the state would respond to the resolution “expediently,” the HMMC said in a statement.
The resolution has been forwarded to the governor’s offices and several legislators.
