The mysterious smoking package that shut down a stretch of Route 3 West last week and snarled traffic turned out to be relatively harmless, according to the Secaucus Police Department.
Police responded to the main section of Route 3 West near Mill Creek Mall on June 8 at around 6:11 p.m. on a report of a smoking package in the highway.
After investigating, officers later determined that the smoldering package was actually a backpack. Its contents? A bowling ball and bowling shoes.

Sat., June 11 – A 43-year-old Lyndhurst woman was arrested on drunk and careless driving charges after police responded to an early morning report of an accident on Route 3 West in town.
Police said the vehicle driven by Varessa Sanchez crashed into a construction vehicle bearing illuminated arrows on the highway after 3 a.m. on Saturday. She was charged with DWI and careless driving at 3:25 a.m., police said.
Sat., June 11 – A 26-year-old West New York woman and 51-year-old Union City woman were arrested for shoplifting at Kohl’s in the evening.
Police said Orisel Santiesteban and Daisy Wilson tried to take $300 worth of miscellaneous clothing and jewelry from the store.
Tue., June 7 – A 34-year-old East Orange man was arrested for trying to pass counterfeit money at Wal-Mart in the early afternoon, police said.
Darrell Hall attempted to purchase a Samsung TV worth $1,172 and was discovered attempting to use fake money for the transaction at around 1 p.m., police said.
Fri., June 3 – A 23-year-old Secaucus man was arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart in the late evening.
Police said Shane Nagel attempted to leave the store without paying for $349 worth of video games and hygiene products at around 9:12 p.m.
Fri., June 3 – A 36-year-old North Bergen woman was arrested for shoplifting at Kohl’s in the afternoon Friday.
Poice said Milid Khalil tried to take $172 worth of clothing, fragrances and a blender at around 3:04 p.m.
