Bruscino Fends Off Challenge

Secaucus primary voters in the 3rd Ward tapped Democratic committee-backed Mark Bruscino over challenger Michael Makarski by 48 votes Tuesday night in the town’s lone contested seat for town council.

Bruscino beat Makarski 286-238, a nearly 10% margin of victory amid low turnout, according to the official Hudson County tally.

Although Makarski, a board of education trustee, is a Democrat, he challenged the local Democratic committee under Assemblyman Vincent Prieto with a bid in the primary.

Bruscino, an administrator for the Kearny Board of Education, served a term as a board of education trustee during the 1990s before opting not to run again as his son participated in youth sports in town.

The Democratic committee’s other two council candidates — Robert Zych (1st Ward) and Nancy Matteo (2nd Ward) — sailed through unchallenged in the primary election.

With relatively low turnout in a primary without any closely contested national or county-wide contests, Matteo garnered 136 votes to nab the 2nd Ward Democratic nomination for council. Zych picked up 196 votes to rep 1st Ward Democrats in the fall.

Bruscino will face Mayor Mike Gonnelli’s Take Back Secaucus candidate,  Susan Pirro, in the fall.

Zych is challenging incumbent Independent Gary Jeffas, while Matteo will square off against James Clancy, who was appointed by the mayor to finish out Gonnelli’s council term and is seeking election in his own right in November.

  1. Bittersweet win for Mike. Here he is telling half the people he is supporting Sue Pirro. Then he is telling some people he is supporting Mark Bruscino. Which one is it Mike. It appears you are in between a rock and a hard place. You should be used to it though, isn’t that what usually happens to pathological liars.

  2. TBS gonna eat your lunch in Nov Vinnie!

  3. Michael will be back. He came awfully close to a big upset. We’ll see if Mark can help the party keep that third ward seat in the fall.

  4. Hey sticktothefacts( Anthony Iacono) Another one of Elwell’s followers down. Must be hard be you lately. ANOTHER CLEAN SWEEP IN NOVEMBER !!!

  5. I’m shocked!

This twenty something year old know nothing inexperienced kid didn’t win? Are the voters actually waking up?

Have they finally realized that this kid was on the board along with the Trombetta’s, etc who voted in Randina, the one who now has our board of ed in shambles?

    I’m impressed.

I’m hoping we have more instances in the future where EXPERIENCED and EDUCATED people will be voted for!

  6. @Voice of Reason

How exactly is Mark “educated?” The candidate in this race with a college degree was Makarski, not Bruscino. Now, this shouldn’t be considered the only factor in picking candidates, but saying Bruscino won because he’s “educated” is laughable. In fact, it would be nice to see an “educated” candidate win an election in this town, since we have never had a mayor with any sort of college degree in our history.

  7. Mark Brucino an “EXCELLENT ” choice voters, Finally we can depend on a Sincere , Smart, well Educated Person . Thank God the voters are finally paying attention.

  8. Oh, I know nothing of Bruscino. I just know plenty about Makarski and can tell you he’s the wrong choice no matter who is running against.

  9. Definition of: ed·u·cat·ed [ éjj? kàyt?d – adjective

    1. Well taught: having had a good education
This is the writing of an educated person.

    2. Cultured: showing good taste or refinement
    A quiet educated manner.

    3. Knowledgeable: having the benefit of experience or knowledge
    an educated opinion
Cast an educated eye over the antiques.
It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts… it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.
It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated.

  10. First of all Ron, Its all about who will do the right thing for the town of Secaucus.

  11. I applaud both Mark and Mike.. its not about being a Demarcate Republican, or an Independent or who won. it takes a great person to step up to the plate and try to make a diffrecnce, not many of us are willing to take on that commitment.

For those of you who have nothing better to do than put someone down.. why dont you take that negitive enegy ” your frown and turn is upside down”. and put it to good use.

Self-respect can be a extension of your ego or a priceless virtue.

  12. I wouldn’t be putting anyone down if they were not trying to get into a position that will harm the town I live in. When a moron tries to gain a position where he could have a huge negative impact on others, it is important for people to call him out so as to try and avoid such disasters.
