BOE: Six Vie for Three Slots
Mar 2nd, 2010 | By Greg Hazley | Category: On tap, Schools, SecaucusSix candidates will vie for three Secaucus Board of Education trustee slots in the upcoming April election.
Current trustees Anthony Gerbasio and Frank Trombetta have said they will step down at the end of their three-year terms on the nine-member board, while current president Jack McStowe will defend his seat.
Filing petitions by the March 1 deadline were Mary Ann Weiner, Pat Belenski, Joseph Lewis, Sal Manente and Francis O’Keefe, according to a list from the district.
Michele Impreveduto, who had declared her cadidacy, has dropped out after initially filing.
Hudson County voters head to the polls on April 20.

McStowe is the biggest idiot in town. We gotta get this guy out of there….hopefully a few of these candidates actually have…you know…an EDUCATION….a BRAIN in their head….maybe some LIFE EXPERIENCE? Unlike Makarski, Trombetta, McStowe, etc.
I hope none of the candidates are on the wrong side of 30. We’ve seen how stupid 20-somethings can be…..Manente is good people, that is if it is the older one…I can’t wait to learn the backgrounds of all these people….
Jack McStowe does a lot of good things for this town — especially for the under privileged — and he’s been more than a good trustee. What have you done besides complain an take shots at people?
Vote McStowe!! Steady leadership in tough times.
Vote McStowe! If you want the chaos within the Board of Ed to continue,
Vote McStowe! If you want the BOE to continue to SPEND SPEND SPEND your hard earned money down the drain on exorbitant salaries.
Vote McStowe! If you believe fools with ZERO leadership skills should be in a position to increase your taxes because they can’t get things organized and within budget.
Last I checked, board of education budgets are approved by voters. The trustees don’t push the budgets through, so suggesting otherwise is misleading. But why would we want facts to get in the way.
Last I checked, the board has overseen the hiring of this new super, and the appointment of all these 6 figure salaried supervisors…which the super is using to pad the bank accounts of all her old pals. If the board were running things smoothly, you wouldn’t have boe meetings with packed rooms and chaos. Teachers wouldn’t be disgruntled. If the board were smart, they wouldnt approve the spending of all that money on technology our current infrastructure can’t handle, such as Clarendon schools inability to handle all those smart boards, requiring the school to upgrade the electric system, or too many smart boards being purchased. I’ve talked to teachers in the schools who have said there are smart boards all around that are barely used. Too many of these things were purchased = WASTED MONEY.
I hope we never ever pass another school budget. not while the boe wastes our money like this. Bunch of morons…..
Last I checked, superintendents, CEOs, and any type of management hire deputies they trust and probably have worked with in the past. It’s good business. You make it sound like these positions were created out of thin air and the salaries lobbed on top of the district budget. Cuts were made, retirements happened and the money spent on the overhaul was next to nothing in a $30-million-dollar budget.
I went to a few board meetings last year and didn’t see anything near chaos, unless you consider the odd resident making wild accusations at the microphone.
To call out the district’s plan — approved by voters in this town — to add technology to our schools is insane. There is no such thing as too much technology for schools. Yes, the infrastructure was initially overloaded, but that’s being corrected. Yes, that costs money, but leaving Clarendon’s withering electrical infrastructure unfixed isn’t going to do any good and is probably a safety hazard.
Again, you’re calling the trustees morons for wasting money when the “morons” you should be calling out are the voters who approved the budget.
Oh, you’re 100% right. After-all, it was the moron voters who elected the moron trustees.
There were a few professional and intelligent people with great resumes up for election last time, and idiots with less experience and half a brain won for one reason or another.
I hope after this whole Elwell situation, and the total lack of intelligence shown on the BOE these past few years, the voters will learn.
6 idiots, 3 board slots. It’s like a bad reality show where no one wins and the big losers are our children.
So let me see if I understand “Survivor Fan’s” point (nice name by the way, especially for someone attempting to admonish the people who are running for the board…) Before we know all we need to know about ALL of candidates you are already grouping all of them as “idiots”….do you teach your children to rush to similar judgments in their own lives?
No, I teach my children to not take anyone referring to themselves as “Riot” seriously. In fact, I encourage them to laugh and ridicule anyone who is dumb enough to refer to themselves as that. Or anyone who takes a joke on an internet message board seriously.
Wow….you have actually had conversations with your children about the hypothetical situation involving someone with the last name of “Riot” ?? That seems pretty odd……maybe you should use that time to teach them more valuable (and likely) lessons. (if you haven’t guessed yet, I too was joking…..but you took it seriously……interesting)
Also, you answered “no” when I asked if you taught your children to “rush to judgements”…..yet apparently you do teach them to laugh and ridicule others?
Oh by the way……my question “Do you teach your children…” was obviously a rhetorical question, I’m very sorry if you didn’t realize that. (next time I will use smaller words and possibly even visual aids)
Additionally, I highly doubt your real name is “Survivor fan” ……(you were obviously attempting a joke)……as was I, except my joke was apparently to complex for you…..
(Patrick Riot = Pat Riot……have you guessed it yet? …..here let me help…..it’s PATRIOT)
Once again, next time I will use smaller words.
We need to keep politics out of the schools, so do not vote for Belinski. She can not even make up her mind which team to support. In one breath she is with Demo’s for Change sucking up to Pete Weiner and in her next breath she is supporting Mayor Mike.
I still can’t believe another child is running for the BOE. Not only another child, but someone I know to have a LOT of skeletons in his closet. I hope the voters have learned from their mistakes. Let’s make sure we vote only for people with good pedigree, sincere intentions, and a clear track record, NOT politically connected children barely out of college with ZERO experience and NO track record who only see the BOE as a stepping stone into politics.
Wow, talk about a cranky old man mentality. Why should the board of ed be loaded with old fogies like Tom Troyer who are so out of touch with modern education and wouldn’t know a smart board if it landed on his front porch? You think we need more of that?
This board — and the entire education system — needs fresh thinking and that comes from young, educated minds. Stop dismissing people because of their age. It’s discriminatory and narrow minded.
I agree. Just because I dont want kids fresh out of college on the BOE doesn’t mean I’m talking about retired folks.
I’m talking 30 and 40 year olds who have good careers and have made something of themselves.
I happen to know both the current child on the BOE and the one that is up for election.
Both are jokes.
I bet Voice of Reason is more than willing to tell Michael Makarski to his face about his true feelings for him. It’s really easy to lob personal insults at a person through an anonymous name on a message board, why not voice your displeasures at a Board Meeting or a Town Council meeting? And if you are someone who speaks up at board meetings, why hide behind a fake name on a message board? Tom Troyer may be ‘”out of touch” with today’s education system, but the man has the guts to stand by his words, not hide in anonymity behind a holier than thou board name.
IS THE JOKER YOUR REAL NAME?
1. Because what I say would probably see some family and friends with jobs within the district and town harassed, so I think this is a good place to say what I want without worrying about loved ones suffering.
2. I think it’s funny that you would say such a thing USING A FAKE NAME YOURSELF
Obviously not, but I’m not the one lobbing insults at people from a soapbox while claiming to be a “Voice of Reason.” It’s quite hypocritical to call out someone for being a “child” and a “joke” while hiding in anonymity like a child.
I definitely agree with Joker…..
I agree with Miley’s comments on fresh thinking and new perspectives in education. A candidate like Joseph Lewis will bring that fresh perspective to the Board of Ed. He is an experienced educator who understands the value of fiscal responsibility and a good education.
Is Joe Lewis related to Makarski?
One thing I would like to see is in-depth profiles on the candidates.
We also need to drug test all candidates. Would be a good message to send to our kids.
To pizzahead-you must not been around for the election, otherwise you would have clearly seen Mayor Gonelli support Peter. The common goal for both gentlemen was to rid this town of the disease called Elwell, but we all know how that turned out! So, supporting who you believe in is now called. “sucking up”? So, I guess if you supported Mayor Gonelli, your a suck up for the winner? Before you decide to put anyone down, learn about them. She is highly educated, very motivated, and absolutely dedicated to what she believes in. Obviously you have not been to a town meeting otherwise you would have seen that she stands up for what is good for the town, without an agenda of her own.
To Pizza Head -you really did not see how that election worked. Patty was asked by both parties to help them in the election. Just so you know she has been active in the school system for ten years, serves on numerous committees and is has always put children first. She is intelligent and cares deeply about our children . When the school budget was cut she was one of the first to ask parents to write Chris Christie and asked them to tell him to come to Secaucus , look our children in their eyes, and tell them that their education is less important than a budget. You should really get to know a person before you comment. I am supporting Patty and I know many parents and teachers who are doing the same.
