New Chief in Town
Feb 24th, 2010 | By Greg Hazley | Category: On tap, Police, SecaucusThirty-five-year Secaucus Police Department veteran Capt. John Buckley was promoted to the new position of chief of detectives Tuesday night, an advancement described by officials as a long time coming.

Buckley takes the oath administered by town clerk Michael Marra as Buckley's son, Sean, holds a bible.
Swearing an oath before the governing body and public at the mayor and council’s Feb. 23 meeting, Buckley was flanked by his wife, Theresa, son Sean, and daughter, Sarah, as well as police department detectives and other officials.
“I’ve never met a man so willing and dedicated to his job,” said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Corcoran. “His dedication [in] coming down here on weekends, [working] countless hours; 50 to 60-hour weeks is the norm for this man. He is worthy of this promotion and it’s long overdue.”
Buckley was saluted with three ovations from those present at the meeting — upon swearing the oath, after being praised by Corcoran, and upon exiting the council chambers.
“You’ll have my honesty for as long as I’m here,” said Buckley, a well-respected member of the force who serves as its spokesman with the media. “I can give you no more than that.”
The council approved the appointment, 7-0, after introducing a measure earlier this year to create the position, which is second-in-command at the police department and carries a $149K base salary.

In such economic times this new Town Council have been doing nothing but giving out large and unnecessary pay increases. Is this new position really warranted? Could the town function without it? I think most would agree. Speaking to several members of the department this promotion damaged an already low moral for the SDP. I would only hope that going forward our council addresses all increases with a very close eye.
Agreed that we need to tighten the belts. But this guy has been a great asset to Secaucus since I was a kid.
Hey even Shinnick had nothing to say about this spending and we all no how responsible he has been over the years when it comes to town finances. LOL I guess channel 9 wasn’t their for him to grand stand or MM, Jr. didn’t write a script for him.
This man has been with the Secaucus PD for 35 years. He was pass over for a pomotion time after time by Elwell and his goons. All because he didn’t play Elwells little games. Good for you CHIEF BUCKLEY, its about time.
Congratulations to Chief John Buckley. He has always been a great person and a dedicated police officer for 35 years. It’s a shame when politics stop a good man from a promotion.
More brass to oversee 6 or 7 detectives…come on..this was payback for putting the right sign on his lawn.. ore money in his pension for what 50-60 hours how much overtime does he get oh thats right he is a team played he takes “time” just like the rest of the division
Padding the pension, padding the pension.
Now we know why the pension is broke. Create a position tailored to one, pad the salary for a year and collect for the rest of your life. Not like anyone else will benefit as the job goes away when he leaves. I wonder if NJ knows about these games?
Secaucus is broke but they keep spending. Way to go Gonnelli. Looks like you will be a short timer yourself.
It’s about time. Keep up the GOOD WORK CHIEF BUCKLEY !!!
