Biz Briefs: Game Store, Xanadu
Feb 4th, 2010 | By Greg Hazley | Category: Business, On tap, Secaucus, XanaduIt looks like Secaucus Plaza’s newest tennant will be a video game store. We snapped these photos the other day.
Update: The store is called Planet Games (201-210-2268) and it is slated to be open seven days a week.
As far as competition, there’s a GameStop retail store over on Mill Creek Drive. The Plaza gets a lot of traffic from a gaming store’s target demographic, though, so it could be a good fit.
The store is taking up a vacant space occupied at least a year ago by a dollar store.
If anyone has more info, let us know or post it below…
Hartz Exit: Secaucus-based Hartz Mountain said it will pull the plug on its Bloomfield factory operating since the early 1960s which employs 180.
The exit, first reported by the Star-Ledger, will take place over a year and a half into late 2011.
The company said R&D and packaging development staff will be relocated and noted it is working with the workers’ union on the transition. Employees will be able to apply for jobs at other Hartz operations.
Its plant in Plesant Plain, Ohio, will increase production to make up for the cut.
CEO William Ecker said in a statement: “While we deeply appreciate the efforts of our associates who have worked hard to overcome the facility’s inherent shortcomings, we’ve determined that it’s ultimately in the best interest of the company to close down the facility over the next two years.”
Lifeline for Xanadu? With Xanadu’s anchor retail store, Cabela’s, ostensibly withdrawing from the development last month, the problem of the stalled $2 billion project lands squarely in the lab of new Gov. Chris Christie. So what’s he going to do?
Christie this week called the tract of land the most valuable real estate in New Jersey saying the state can’t let its fate fall to “special interests.” [The developers lease the land from the state at the hefty cost of about $160M.] Christie’s remarks were seen as a shot across the bow of its current developers, backed by Colony Capital, who stopped working on the project in March as cash dried up. The governor has also said he wants to bring NASCAR racing to the Meadowlands.
Meanwhile, another developer, The Related Companies, has expressed interest in possibly taking the project to completion with a $500M infusion. (Fact: Related is headed by billionaire Stephen Ross, who owns the Miami Dolphins. Jets fans must love that.)
The end of 2010 is still the hopeful opening date for Xanadu.
Help Wanted: The Juicy Coture Outlet at 55 Hartz Way has posted an open store manager position. Details are here.

I predict by the time Christie is out of office, Xanadu will be exactly where it is right now.
I predict that video game store will be out of business before 2011 comes around lol
These are the kinds of stores we need downtown. Not check cashing business and nightclubs.
True but what are they thinking, there is a gamestop and toys’r'us within 2 miles! Wish them the best of luck cause they’re gonna need it.
Dont forget Best Buy
Video games are easier to buy in this town than groceries lol
hahaha very true!!
Xanadu failed because of one person, Mike Gonnelli!!!
You spelled tenant wrong!
I think its good to have a video game store in the plaza. Kids are passing by there all the time to get pizza, KFC or go to Buckmuller. Its much easier to get to for our towns kids than any of the other stores. Obviously out of towners are going to go to the Best Buys and Game Stops. But as residents we should shop there when we are getting our kids video games.
What other types of businesses can do good there? Remember its a small space so youre very limited.
well the store wont last unless its a tax right off remember its the landlord that sucks thasts why acme isnt a round oh mom and dad stores yeah right 5 10 grand a month rent what a joke
