Clancy Slated for Gonnelli Seat
Dec 1st, 2009 | By Greg Hazley | Category: On tapSecaucus Independents plan to nominate former councilman James Clancy to fill the remaining year on Mayor-elect Mike Gonnelli’s council term starting in 2010.
“Jim has a lot of experience and brings a lot to the table,” said Gonnelli, who added that Clancy supported his successful bid for mayor and past campaigns. [He donated $120 to the Take Back Secaucus slate at a July fundraiser.]
Clancy, a Gillis Place resident, is a social studies teacher at Secaucus Middle School. He served on the council representing the 2nd Ward during the mid-1980s and early ’90s, including six years as recreation liaison. He was first elected in 1986 and served four terms through 1993. He sought to return to the council in 1999 but was defeated by Independent John Bueckner after winning the Democratic primary.
Clancy was involved in a strange altercation following a Feburary 2007 council meeting that led to allegations that he made “terroristic threats” against recreation supervisor John Schwartz, who filed a police report.
He will face approval by the newly constituted Independent-majority town council in January. The Gonnelli-led Independent slate will occupy six of the seven seats on the governing body starting in 2010.

I don’t mind this move at all. Clancy is a good man. A boring teacher, but a good man.
Funny, Voice. I could never stay awake in any history class, though.
Jim was a good council person and will be again.
mmmm-question in 1999 was clancy a hc democrat with team elwell ?
I had Clancy as a teacher and liked him. He’s a real good guy! I guess boring goes along with History class and those who teach it.(LOL)
I do remember hearing about the incident between he and John Schwartz but what is up with “terroristic threats”???? I find that hard to believe especially since Schwartz was also once one of Clancys students.
I have no problem with the choice I think Jim will bring a different view to the table, but I dont understand how mike has changed the process already. I would have like to see at least three names for a choice. Mike is doing excataly what he told the Elwell team not to do. Mike you need to be fair and honest.
What a joke. You couldn’t find one person in the school district, teacher or student that doesn’t think Clancy is a complet idot. What a complete insult to Doug Depice. Gonnelli promised this postion to both men and for him to choose the clown over Depice is totally whacked out. Doug Depice has been attending meeting for over a year, Clancy comes to one meeting and toally makes himself look like a fool. Gonnelli had to tell him not to attend anymore meetings . As I was hoping for change I realize that Take Back Secaucus might be just that.
Mr. Clancy is a wonderful choice and I hope the council selects him at reorganization. As far as other choices, the law states that three choices must be presented if the council is replacing someone who was elected as either a Democrat or Republican. That is not required if the person being replaced was elected as an Independent. This is exactly the same procedure that was used when Mr. Kickey replaced Mr. Elwell 10 years ago when Mr. Elwell resigned to become Mayor and Mr. Kickey was named to replace him.
jennifer its nice to hear from someone who supports ex mayor elwell’s decision and supports mike’s decision but steve was asking “where is the change?”
Mr. Markovitch I wasn’t responding to Steve and I wasn’t supporting Mayor Elwell’s decision. I was commenting on Greg’s comment that “Mike (Gonnelli) changed the process already.” It has been the process for years, because it is the law. We don’t know how many people the Independents considered. But we do know Mayor Elwell presented three names to replace Mr. Kane but made it very clear that he wanted Dawn McAdam. And we do know that New Democratic chairman Prieto presented three names to replace Elwell but that seemed like a set up as two of them told the council to pick Mr. Steffens. The Democrats may have followed the law but it didn’t look very sincere to me.
jennifer-i thought you said elwell followed the law when he appointed bob to the council, are you now saying that was not a good decision or do you support that decision as right and legal?
Mr. M – I said Mayor Elwell followed the law when Mr. Kickey was appointed to the town council. Yes the appointment was legal. I never said it wasn’t. Please read my comments BEFORE you decide what I wrote. I also never said whether I agreed with the decision. I said it appears the same proceedure is being followed with the pending appointment of Mr. Clancy and that I think it is a very good decision. Still confused?
confused? im trying to find out if you think presenting the council with one choice is better than than giving the council three good choices like the dems and reps are required to do.i know you think clancy is a good choice.
Mr. M, Is the condo on 10th Street commercially zoned?
billy bob-residential condos are not commercial -
John, you’re a moron. You obviously aren’t comprehending what Jennifer is writing. My advice, go take some reading comprehension classes before you start to comment on stuff you don’t understand.
im a moron who is trying to learn.please help me-i asked jennifer a question see number 12 and got no answer perhaps you know the answer?billy bob asked me a question and i answered , lets see if you can answer a simple question-time for the moron to sign off
Jennifer made it clear that in this situation, only one selection is required by law. Back when McAdam was selected, it was a different situation, and the law required three selections.
Jennifer’s response was pretty clear. Yet you did not understand it.
vor i get that but im asking you and jennifer if presenting three choices to the council is better than just appointing a person like dennis did?see number 12 for my original question which you both fail to answer!!! i understand the law but whats best for secaucus, i thinks thats whats important.
