No H1N1 Vaccine in Town

Oct 29th, 2009 | By | Category: Health, On tap

Secaucus has not received any supply of the H1N1 vaccine.

h1n1We found a listing online for a to-be-determined clinic with the North Hudson Commmunity Action Corp. and Seacucus Health Department, but both organizations told us there is nothing scheduled.

The online listing gives Secaucus High School as a location for a “Free H1N1 Community Vaccination Clinic for CDC Designated Priority Groups” but no date is on the horizon and quantities of the vaccine shipped anywhere so far have been limited.

The closest location we’ve heard that has the swine flu vaccine is Baron’s Drug in Hoboken, which has the nasal mist that isn’t for pregnant women.

We’ll keep you posted as we get information. The Secaucus website has no information and no one raised the issue at the last public meeting of the mayor and council.

Here’s a link (PDF) to the federal government’s H1n1 vaccine brochure.

  1. Great info.

They’re making a whole big thing about this swine flu, but it isn’t any worse than regular flu according to several doctors I have spoken with.

Obviously the elderly, children, and pregnant women have to take the same precautions as normal, just like every flu season.

The media is drumming up this swine flu thing as a distraction from more important issues.

  2. It’s all Elwell’s fault!!!!! When Mike G becomes mayor there will be enough vaccine in Secaucus for every resident and their pets, too!

(Thought I’d just preempt the comments that are sure to come)

  3. HA HA BillO!

Good one! At least you have a sense of humor. I like that.

You seem to forget– when Mike G becomes mayor he will wipe swine flu and the regular flu out completely and there will be no need for vaccines. LOL!

See I also have a sense of humor.

In all seriousness I have to agree with VOR on this. My better half is a Doctor and since I fall into the eligible group she wants me to get the H1N1 vaccine but I tend to think this all a bunch of overblown nonsense.

I may get the flu shot but they can keep there H1N1 crap.

  4. All this swine flu is just hype from the Government. This is just another distraction to keep the public from the real issues that this country has right now.

  5. All this swine flu is just hype from the Government.

Actually, it’s hype from the US media (present company excluded). If you watch BBC or any foreign news, they are being responsible and downplaying the hype on H1N1. For example, most reports I’ve seen make it clear that more people died from the regular flu in a given period than from the pig. Some of my friends’ kids (not in Secaucus) have gotten it and luckily they were not in the at-risk age group. They said that it was not something pleasant but it didn’t require them to be hospitalized and the effects of it were no worse than say, a really bad case of strep throat or mono.

  6. The reason why the H1N1 (Swine Flu) is actually important is because this is a new strain of the flu so there as been no immunity built up against it. These are all preventative precautions that are necessary to reduce the chances that someone gets infected with the influenza or passes it on to a person who is more susceptible to it. It is at the very least important that we have the vaccine in the schools and for other target populations such as pregnant women, children and young adults ages 1-24, and elderly.

It’s not media propaganda or the government trying to control you.. It also has nothing to do with former Mayor Elwell or Mike Gonnelli.. It’s to prevent the contraction of the disease and deaths. Because due to tax dollars, there are people who’s job is to study health in populations and to come up with ways to protect people from preventable illnesses and death. For those who are part of the certian target populations, the vaccine is free depending on where you go.

And to address BillO, the reason why the number for those who died of the flu is less than the regular seasonal flu is because we’ve only had one “big” outbreak.. which could account for more duing this actual flu season. When it comes down to it, this is up to personal choice. But getting these vaccines are important, especially if you are in the population that is more at target to get sick.

  7. Thanks for the info, DaniMP.

  8. My pediatrician Riverside Pediatrics has the vaccine but only the nasal mist, which can’t be given to children with asthma. I plan to get my daughter the vaccine As soon as I can because she has asthma which puts her at a higher risk of serious complications.

  9. The link now shows a clinic is scheduled for 11/21 in Union City but it’s only for pregnant women and kids from 6 months to 5 years old.

  10. To add to Tricia’s comment. The nasal spary is also NOT recommended for pregnant women and infants.
