Rail Link Ready to Roll

It’s not exactly the golden spike at Promontory Point, but to anyone who’s idled in Route 3 or Turnpike traffic before, during or after a Giants Stadium event, it could be a bit of relief.

New Jersey Transit said on Wednesday that the rail link between New York, Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands will be online by Sun., July 26.

041309cars_xanadu250The first event to test the connection will by the COCACAF Gold Cup Final soccer match that day.

The new link not only connects Seacaucus to the Meadowlands via rail, but it gives New York City commuters the rail option option via Hoboken.

Will those epic traffic jams after concerts and football games be gone? Probably not, but this will likely help.

It’s also good news for fans who pay $20 to park at the Meadowlands for games and events, as well as a welcome development for Xanadu, if it ever opens.

Trains will be added about 3.5 hours ahead of stadium events of 50K fans or more, which means Giants and Jets games, as well as major concerts and the occasional soccer event. Smaller events (including those at the IZOD Center) will mean the dreaded shuttle buses will be running between the Junction and the stadium.

NJ Transit said the trip from Hoboken to Giants Stadium will take 23 minutes and service will run every 10 to 20 minutes between the stadium, Hoboken and Secaucus.

Daily service to the stadium will be announced at a later day, NJ Transit said.

Cost is $7.75 from New York and $5.75 from Hoboken.

For the final season at Giants Stadium, bus service will also continue to run from the Port Authority in Manhattan.

NJ Transit also said this week that it approved it $1.79 billion budget without a fare increase.

  1. It’s CONCACAF….the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football….the confederation of FIFA that the United States belongs to….

Looks like the US will be in that final…..they are 2-0 in the group stage, face tiny Haiti next which is an easy win. As long as they dont slip up in the semi’s, we should be watching win the Gold Cup championship trophy yet again in the Meadowlands like we did in 2007.
