Jeffas: Rep is Damaged
Jul 28th, 2009 | By Greg Hazley | Category: Mike Gonnelli, On tap, Politics, SecaucusSecaucus 1st Ward Councilman Gary Jeffas, appearing on Fox 5 New York’s “Good Day NY” program this morning said that Secaucus’ reputation has been damaged by the arrest and resignation of Mayor Dennis Elwell.
“What occurred here has been broadcast not just throughout Hudson County and New Jersey, but throughout the United States,” he said. “so, Secaucus now has a black mark on its record.”
Jeffas said he has sympathy for Elwell and his family, but prompted by host Greg Kelly as to whether Elwell seemed reluctant to take the alleged bribe per the FBI report, Jeffas only said: “There may be more to that or not. I take [the indictment] just on its face value. I really don’t know anything beyond what’s in there.”
Jeffas continued: “If the allegations turn out to be true, it doesn’t matter if its $500 or $100,000. Government is not for sale. That’s Hudson County — people think it’s for sale. That’s not Secaucus. That’s not the way we do politics here.”
Jeffas said he hopes the November election will put fellow Independent councilman Mike Gonnelli in the mayor’s office.
“If there’s going to be a sweeping change we can get Independents in there who are not so connected and rooted in Hudson county and Hudson County politics,” he said, pointing to Tuesday’s introduction of a “pay-to-play” ordinance.
