New Dawn in Secaucus

There were no tie votes on this Tuesday night.

Dawn McAdam was unanimously chosen by the Secaucus Democratic Committee on March 3 to be appointed to the open seat on the town council.

The vote and subsequent swearing in brought to a close a month-long political standoff among the six current council members sparked by the unexpected resignation of Richard Kane on Feb. 1.

McAdam was among three candidates recommended to the council by the Democratic committee, which urged McAdam be chosen because the council lacked a female member.

The council deadlocked, 3-3, on two votes to fill the 1st Ward seat last week — first on Robert Zych, who drew Independent support, and second on McAdam, who was supported by the three Democrats on the governing body. The stalemate threw the appointment back to the Democratic committee, which put an end to the vacancy Tuesday night.

The committee voted at LaReggia restaurant on Wood Road and McAdam was sworn in with her husband, David, and father-in-law, Charles, by Municipal Court Judge Kathleen A. Walrod.

“The vote went 100 percent for Dawn with no objections,” said a source.

McAdam will fill out Kane’s term this year and is expected to run on the Democratic slate in the June primary with Mayor Dennis Elwell and Deputy Mayor John Reilly.
