Thursday Briefs
Feb 19th, 2009 | By Greg Hazley | Category: Meadowlands, On tap, PoliticsSecaucus Enigma: Sure we’re a quiet town with good schools and some new development, but two issues working against Secaucus are the lack of a supermarket and the P.R. problem of town politics. That’s according to Simone Shaw-Disla, a realtor in town who blogs at ActiveRain.com.
She pleads: “ Secaucus is still ranked #11 in NJ Monthly as one of the best places to live in NJ and I still agree, but, people, can we get a supermarket in the town?!”
On the council, Simone has this request: “I really wish they would get back to the more important issues like a supermarket.”
We mention this here because esecaucus.com has been getting emails along that same vein, so Simone isn’t the only one with that opinion.
ATM Charges Targeted: Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (D-Secaucus), who is co-sponsor of a bill to require ATM operators to inform customers when they charge fees for balance inquiries, saw the measure pass the Assembly and it now heads to the State Senate.
“ATM operators who set up their system to unknowingly charge consumers for simply requesting a balance inquiry are doing nothing more than taking advantage of their customers,” Prieto said in a statement. “Preying on consumers who aren’t even making transactions is bad business.”
When a customer checks a checking or savings balance at some ATMs, they are charged without warning. Banks disclose the fees when accounts are opened.
ATM operators face fines up to $1,000 a day for not displaying the fee and giving users the chance to opt out of the transaction.
The bill sailed through the Assembly on a 77-1 vote.
Meadowlands History Coming to Town: The NJ Meadowlands Commission said it will present a free slide/video show on the past, present and future of the Meadowlands in all 14 areas towns by the end of the year. The Kearney Public Library is up first tonight at 6:30 p.m.
